Distributed in fragmented groups within the lowland rainforests, populations of Scarlet Macaws can be found from Mexico to Panama in Central America, and east of the Andes, spanning from Colombia all the way down to Bolivia and southern Brazil in South America.
There is clear evidence of a decline in the wild population of Scarlet Macaws across their entire range. While the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) categorises them as being at the lowest level of concern for extinction due to their extensive habitat, the situation is quite different in Costa Rica. In this region, Scarlet Macaws have disappeared from many of their previously inhabited areas, leaving only two viable sub-populations. Moreover, it is estimated that there may be no more than 4,000 of these birds remaining in Central America.
