The snowy owl, also know as the white owl, polar owl or Arctic owl, is one of the largest species of owl. It is largely diurnal and is native to Arctic regions. They tend to enjoy wide-open areas, staying close to the ground and they breed in the treeless Arctic tundra. The snowy owl is a nomadic bird, rarely breeding at the same locations or with the same mates on an annual basis and often not breeding at all if prey is unavailable. Because its behaviour is unpredictable, its status in the wild is difficult to determine and it is classified as of ‘Least Concern’ by the IUCN. Nevertheless, recent data suggests the species is in considerable decline. While the causes are not well-understood, changes to its natural habitat due to global warming are probably significant.
