The Stellar sea lion also known as the northern sea lion, is a near-threatened species of sea lion in the northern Pacific. Even though protected, populations declined markedly in the 1980s and 1990s. Scientists are unclear as to why this is the case.
It is the largest of the eared seals. These animals are social and congregate at various times throughout the year when mating and breeding are not taking place. The big bulls are very noticeable as they are three times larger than females.
