African buffalo have never been tamed. This is because they are unpredictable, huge with a lethal set of horns. Among the main African mammals, only hippos and elephants pose a greater threat to humans.
Cape buffalo can’t go for long periods without drinking, and they are usually within 10 miles of drinking water. In warmer months, they roll around in mud to help avoid insect bites and crush any that may be on them.
Although African buffalo are classified by the IUCN red list as a species of ‘least concern’, hunting by humans for meat and trophies, introduced diseases such as rinderpest, and habitat loss are all threats to the species.
